Artist Statement

My art is an exploration of light, color, and space, where nature and inner reflection intersect. On one hand, I turn to the metaphors of organic forms—petals, fruits, leaves—to create images imbued with vitality, tenderness, and at the same time, a transcendent stillness. Colors and textures in my work do not merely illustrate; they speak. Through them, one can feel the pulse of nature, its rhythm, movement, and serenity.
On the other hand, my practice is a dialogue with myself and with the world. Through female figures, portraits, and symbols of war, separation, or hope, I examine how external events transform our inner landscapes. I ask what it means to be a woman in times of crisis and what it means to search for meaning when the ground beneath us seems to collapse. The female figure in my work is not just a portrait but an interpretation of strength and fragility, loss and rebirth.
Technically, I play with contrasts: between realism and abstraction, between deep saturated colors and light transparency. I often use background or negative space to let the image “breathe,” so that it becomes not only an object but also a presence. My palette combines warm tones that convey intimacy and emotion with colder, darker shades that introduce tension, drama, or contemplation.
When people encounter my work, I want them not only to see but also to feel—something both familiar and distant, a space for their own reflection. For me, art is not only a way of representing the world but also a way of asking: What do I feel? Who am I among others? What is my role when everything is changing?

Biography

Julia Velyka is a Ukrainian visual artist based in Dnipro. Trained as a specialist in export sales, she built a successful international career that took her to over 30 countries. Yet art has always been her inner language — a way to reflect, heal, and search for meaning in times of personal and collective uncertainty. Painting became a space of balance, meditation, and quiet resilience.
Since 2019, Julia has studied in a private art studio, steadily developing her technique and visual language. Her works have been presented in collective exhibitions in Ukraine (Lviv, Kyiv, Kharkiv) and abroad (USA). Her first solo exhibition opened in October 2025 in Dnipro. She works mainly with oil, acrylic, and mixed media, creating textured surfaces that hold both tension and serenity.
Julia’s artistic practice lies at the intersection of nature and inner reflection. Through organic forms, floral imagery, and female figures, she explores themes of strength, fragility, loss, and rebirth. Her compositions merge realism and abstraction, light and transparency, creating emotional spaces rather than literal depictions. The human body and natural forms become parallel metaphors — both vulnerable and resilient, capable of renewal after destruction.
